Sometimes I feel like the only reason people talk anymore is to prove that they know more than the person they're talking to. But then the other person does the same, and it turns into an irrational argument/fight, with each person using different words, but their actual meaning is "I'm smarter than you". Books unite us by letting us see the world through others eyes, without having to argue and fight about it. They let us have something solid to hold onto in a world where things are constantly changing. Actual books (not the ones that you download onto your device) won't change when something isn't politically correct, or when someone doesn't like something about them. They let us keep ahold of knowledge so we're not constantly re-calculating, re-writing, and re-thinking things that have been long figured out by now. They make it so we're not in a constant loop of figuring something out, forgetting it, figuring it out again, and forgetting it again.
Not only do we learn real, school-related things from books though. Fictional books help us to escape from the world we live in, and connect with others through our different interests and hobbies. I couldn't say how many friends I've made because of books. Books also keep our imaginations alive by making us think of the impossible becoming possible. If we didn't have books, our world would be like the world in Fahrenheit 451. Frightening, divided, and careless. Books make it possible to think about something other than ourselves.
